Our History And Training Philosophy

The Fighters Garage has been in the Falls Church area for decades.  It has always focused its training such that two central goals are accomplished at the same time: reality-based self-defense and fitness.  We all know how time is precious and no one in the Northern Virginia area can afford to waste any time.  We all need to make the most of the time we have when we train.  Here at The Fighters Garage we can make that happen for you.

First, the skill set that you will be learning as you train with us is practical.  Whether you are learning a technique in a Krav Maga, or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, or Filipino Martial Arts class, you’ll know that you’re learning a technique that has been tested and proven in a real self-defense situation.  Why waste your time learning things that don’t actually work, right?

Second, while you’re learning techniques that will serve as your tools in your growing self-defense toolbox, you’ll be accomplishing one more goal.  You’ll be working on your fitness goals in a manner that’s fun, and compliments your self-defense goals.  Why spend time running on a treadmill, when you can acquire the type of fitness that a person needs in a self-defense situation.  And did we mention that you’ll be having fun while you do all this too?

The Fighters Garage is committed to developing and maintaining a community that recognizes and values the inherent worth and dignity of every person; fosters tolerance, sensitivity, understanding, and mutual respect among its members; and encourages each individual to strive to reach his or her own potential with respect to the goals they wish to achieve.

Others’ beliefs and practices are honored, even if they are not shared. Practitioners remain centered in their values, but not fixed in a position, instead moving around to flexibly view an issue from many different angles. The more one expands themselves, the more their own style will coalesce and become credible. Adjust your perspective and see the difference in your application. Commitment is to the process, not outcome, in the belief that from a good process will emerge a better outcome. As the Zen adage says: In the landscape of spring, there is neither better nor worse….the flowering branches grow naturally, some long, some short.

Training is a “Path” or a “Way”.  It is a path of self-improvement that allows a person to deepen their self knowledge, strengthen their bodies, and improve themselves physically, mentally and spiritually through rigorous physical training. For those looking to become a better version of themselves, this is one way to do so.

While self-defense training is serious business and an attitude of seriousness should be present at all times, we also adopt the Keep-It-Playful training philosophy as espoused by Professor Ryron Gracie of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, in which training partners go at an acceptable pace for everyone to benefit from the training at hand.

In addition to the above, The Fighters Garage prohibits discrimination against any member of the community on the basis of race, religion, sex, ancestry, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or nationality. It is also our policy to comply with all applicable national and local laws pertaining to nondiscrimination and equal opportunities.

All I can say is, is “wow!”  I’m not the most athletic, nor the most flexible, and I hate to work out.  But I gotta say that training here at The Fighters Garage makes me want to come back again, and again, and again.  If I miss a week or two, it drives me nuts.  I need my Jiu-Jitsu fix.  The thing though that has surprised me the most is that I’ve learned how to actually defend myself against a bigger and more athletic opponent – the very purpose of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.  Everyone should try it out, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Professor Asher sets the example here at The Fighters Garage  by not only being a great martial artist and instructor, but by fostering a positive attitude that runs through each one of his students.  After years of living and training in Brazil I did not know what to expect returning to the U.S..  I was extremely fortunate to find Asher and The Fighters Garage.  I was immediately impressed with the positive energy and love for Jiu-jitsu that starts with Asher and is everywhere in his school.  My son finally started training this year.  He was hesitant at first but Asher’s warm demeanor made my son’s BJJ class his favorite activity of the week!  Although my job has taken me far from the DC area, when I do return, I will be back at The Fighters Garage!  Thank you Asher Willner and The Fighters Garage!
